Wilhelm Emil Messerschmitt is the most famous German aircraft designer and manufacturer.Messerschmitt's single most important design was the Bf 109, designed in 1934 which remains the most-produced fighter in history. Another Messerschmitt model, the Me 209, broke the absolute world airspeed record. Messerschmitt AG also produced the first jet-powered aircraft in the world, the Me 262. Its a good bargain for the price (I paid $2.75 plus $3.99 shipping). It's only 126 pages so not much detailed information is provided for the various airplane models or designs. The book offers good summary descriptions of the design development history of each aircraft type or model and provides summary tabulations of dimensions and performance characteristics.I thought the most interesting part was the first 40 pages that described Messerschmitt's designs from the 1920s and early 1930s. These were mostly single-engine aircraft built for small German airlines and private individuals. It's difficult to find information on these aircraft. The next 70 or so pages then describe the warplanes designed for the Luftwaffe. The airplanes include prototypes which were built in ones or twos and include conventional propeller designs and jets. Finally, the last 10 pages or so describe Messeschmitt's post-war efforts at designing military and commercial aircraft. By and large, his efforts resulted in continuous failure.
