This makes an excellent addition to the John Barry spy music library, true to the Barry sound, yet as contrasting to the Bond music as the film is to the more well known double-oh movies. As a soundtrack The Ipcress File could have suffered from the repetition of the theme song as did the Quiller Memorandum also by Barry, but here the song hook is stronger and there is real variety in the alternate presentations of the theme, particularly in the jazz versions so close to Barry's roots. Notable is the entertaining audio clips from the film after each tune, a gimmick that can sometimes be annoying, here seems to fit in seamlessly as the English voices and accents have a lyrical quality to them and also manage to impressively sum up the plot and tell the story of the movie. Highly recommended.
